Much to many people’s disbelief, there are more products available than just pads and tampons able to assist women with their periods. Disposable, environmentally-damaging products have dominated the market, making many think that these were the only options out there - but there are some seriously sustainable (and clever) period products that we’d like to talk about.
With the first one being period panties.
Period panties have many other names - such as period underwear, menstrual underwear, reusable period pants and leak-proof underpants - but they are all essentially the same thing. They work in a similar ways to that of a pad (being that nothing has to be inserted inside to collect blood), but rather than ripping a used pad out and sticking a new one in every couple of hours, period underwear has an absorbent gusset that collects the flow instead.
While some worry that you have to change period panties multiple times a day (like you would a pad or tampon), most Modibodi customers report that they can stay in one pair of leak-proof undies all day long - simply changing into a new pair to sleep in if they want overnight protection.
But how does so much get absorbed into the underwear? Well, while we can’t speak on behalf of all period panty brands, we can report that Modibodi uses a Patented Modifier Technology that features three layers working to absorb while keeping you dry and fresh.
In case you wanted a breakdown of each layer, here’s what happens in each of them:
The top layer quickly wicks away moisture, fights bacteria and stops smells, so you stay dry and fresh.
The middle layer safely absorbs fluid and locks it away (2.5 - 20mls depending on the absorbency level you go with).
The bottom layer is extra waterproof protection, so you’re super secure with minimal chance of leaking through.
This triple-threat technology means that the gusset in period panties actually works harder (and better) than a pad does - as the blood doesn’t just sit on the top, but is absorbed in and wicked away from your body, whilst being quick drying so you don’t feel damp.
Another great benefit of period panties is that they are reusable, meaning that after you have worn them for a day you can wash them to wear again! Confused as to how you actually wash a pair of period panties? Check out our blog post here to find out all the steps.
So how do you feel about period panties now? Would you give them a go? If you’re tempted then we can recommend the perfect starter pack for trialing period underwear. You want to opt for a range of absorbencies (to cover for all parts of your period), and vary the style to work with the comfort you want to achieve on your period - remembering to allow for bloating.
We recommend a Seamfree in moderate-heavy for early on in your period, a Sensual hi-waist in heavy/overnight for when you’re really in the thick of it, and a Classic Bikini in light-moderate for the end of your period.
